node highlighting

Hi,

I just started again with Blender, after doing a few tutorials over a
year ago and then quitting because the whole process of creating
anything seemed too cumbersome compared to the CAD systems I am used
to (Catia). I like the (opensource) philosophy of the application and
am very impressed by many of the samples on the Blender and
BlenderArtists.org sites. I want to model a technical object: a car.
Very original indeed. So far I have only been using mesh modelling
and am looking forward to figure out how to work with curves and
surfaces in the near future.

The engineer in me wants things to be accurate, but this does not
seem possible. Just aligning to XYZ coordinates is simply not enough:
I want parallel constraints, exact dimensions, etc. I have not been
able to find if there are constraints that work this way. I could
find something about constraints in the wiki, but that was for
animating.

Another feature I miss is the highlighting of the item which is the
closest to the cursor and thus ready to be selected. Is this basic
function hidden, not enabled by default or just not there?

Are there some tutorials available for engineers who like to try
Blender? It is a completely different way of thinking, but there are
similarities as well. Some basic functionality which I can not find,
must be there since it is fundamental for any modelling operation. I
can not be the first one who encounters this.

Looking forward to receving your answer. Thanks in advance for it.

Regards,
Lars Boelman
