Hiya I think if you're using the zoom function in Blender (mouse scroll wheel) you also have to consider the two kinds of views that Blender has. It has 3D (real world) view, and isometric view. You can switch between these two views with the number 5 on your numpad. In real world view you can zoom straight through an object, but in isometric view it's much easier to zoom and to move around.
