Hoi,

Steven and Alberto: thanks for your suggestions. I am familiar with  
the constraining to an axis and/or grid and the numeric (coordinate)  
approach. That is not what I was looking for though.

An example of how I currently parallelly align two edges in Blender:
- select the edge with the correct alignment and duplicate it
- realign this duplicate edge with one of the vertices as close to  
the location of the appropriate vertex on the edge that has to be  
realigned (by zooming in a lot)
- move the vertices of the to be aligned edge to the duplicated and  
relocated edge by scaling to 0

What I would like to do instead is:
- select the edge with the correct alignment
- select the edge(s) I want to have aligned in the current viewport  
to the first selected edge
- perform a parallel realignment operation

Concerning the node highlighting: all CAD applications I know  
highlight the object which will be selected by a halo or a colour  
change of the object the closest to the cursor. It would for Blender  
also be very convenient, especially when you want to select one  
vertex among a group of vertices/nodes located very close to each  
other. Only a minimal movement of the cursor would mean that the  
wrong vertex would be selected. When the one closest to the cursor  
would be highlighted, it would be immediately clear which one will be  
selected.
