new to blender and 3D

I am trying the tutorials offered at the site you gave but not 
finding that they are working so well.  I am trying to model Gus for 
example.  This seems pretty straightforward but when I try to extrude 
(some tutorials have said the Ekey is really E1 and some E so some 
confusion there for me)I either get two lines coming from the top and 
bottom points or some triangluar shape. ugh.
Any advice/tips would be most appreciated.  Also I'm on a MAC laptop 
adding to the confusion possibly.
