Afaik the history of nurbs started back then, when polygons aren't exactly a good choice for irregular, smooth surfaces (organic type). Maya is the first one implemented nurbs and shows perfect examples of how great nurbs can facilitate organic models. That is why maya got the mark as high end 3d authoring tool. But after subdivision surfaces techniques developed, nurbs are slowly left behind. At least this is what some maya users I know told me. Indeed rhinoceros is the best (maybe the only) specialized Nurbs modeler available in the market. Max got it also, but have been underdeveloped for several years. With subdivision surfaces, NURBS have become the most useless modeling method I've ever know. It is awkward and very demanding. Unless you're aiming for higher accuracy than subd, avoid it. Don't waste your time. Hope that helps
