In the render panel you must hit ANIM, instead of RENDER. You must also set the starting and ending frame of your animation and the frame rate... if you choose a compression format (AVI Codec) a dialog will appear asking you to configure your compression settings, that depends on the codec you wish to use...
Otherwise (AVI raw, or AVI Jpeg) should give you a direct output without any other setings.
