You can also change the crosshair button (Rotation scaling pivot hotkeys:comma, shift comma, period) into just a dot which will rotate things around their own center (Active object). The other cool thing is resizing a whole group by their own origins using the 3 dots depicting individual centers. That one works well for dimming some types of lights as a group. I modeled an old opera house in Blender, putting all of the streetlights on one layer, and an arch of entry lights ( about 20) on another layer. Then, if the archway lights (lamps) were too bright I could switch to that layer, 'A' to select all, then scale them using individual centers and the lights would all dim down. That seems a bit obvious to me and perhaps that is far from what you were asking, but hopefully it may help someone. >
