Yeah, I've just started using Maya for college (3D art major) and up
to this point I've been using Blender for my art and videos. It's sooo
different, everything's more window, button, and mouse based than
Blender, and coming from using Blender for a while now, this was a big
leap from Blender's interface. Maya always wants to know every little
detail of what you're trying to accomplish, compared to Blender, where
you know what you want to do, so you do it, no fussing around with
stupid settings and radio buttons. Even knowing my way around Maya, it
still takes me at least 3 times longer than had I created the same
object in Blender. And the outcome would be the same.
Bad news is this is the industry standard so I'm stuck with it. The
good news is I think big name production companies are starting to
take a look at Blender's capabilities.
The first annoying thing you'll find about Maya's interface is its
track and tumble tools-they SUCK BALLS compared to Blender. 2 minutes
in, I was literally crying because Maya didn't let me do something
that Blender would...I don't remember what it was, but it was
important...maybe it was that Maya wasn't Blender.
Maya made me go from absolutely loving 3D, to absolutely HATING it, I
would find any excuse to not get on the computer just so I didn't have
to wrangle with Maya. But Blender still exists, so I still love 3D.
