no offense to the group, but blenderartists.org/forum is a much better place to ask questions about blender, there are at least 50,000 people who visit that site at least once a week, many much more often. i've seen the rotate wildly thing happen before, it happens when it has a constraint on it that uses an object that uses IT for a constraint, so there is a two way connection and a loop. delete one of the constraints and it should just go back.
