Rob is a smart guy with a lot of Unix experience with installing software the hard way (i.e. from source). My experience with building on OS-X is that it is really not all that much different than other Unix type systems. Pre-packaged software systems such as Darwin Ports or FINK can save a lot of effort and time since they can install many of the prerequisites such as Gdk, Gtk, perhaps FLTK, and the many image format libraries. I have only used FINK. When Leopard came out, FINK seemed to be faltering but maybe it has picked up again. There are ways to build fat binaries even when libtool is involved. The procedure is documented somewhere in the developer pages on Apple's web site. A problem is that there may still be areas of the software which depend on CPU-dependent things determined by the configure script. For example, the existing Autoconf endian test is useless when building fat binaries (may be fixed in next Autoconf release I think).
