I am pleased that in my case it all worked so easily using CMake.

The script on the web page I gave does it all for you and if for no
other reason, I found it to be a terrific way to compile the whole GTK2
libraries.

I will get back to doing the GTK+OSX and check that it also works if you
prefer to use that.

On machines where the jpeg, png, OpenEXR libraries are installed and the
include files can be found, they do not get built and the system ones
are used instead. My kubuntu installation had all the jpeg and thus I
did not see what to do when it was not available. On OS-X, there was no
jpeg library so I had to modify CMake to create it from source. The
current status is that zlib, jpeg, lcms and OpenEXR will build from the
directories in the cinepaint distribution. Somehow, png seems to work
without having to compile libpng. But I am a bit confused as to how that
is.

It is for such reasons that testers are really needed as I cannot create
"sandbox" configurations of all the combinations of libraries that may
or may not exist on a system. Testers who can report on which system it
works or break would greatly help me. I can quickly fix build problems
if told what breaks.
