After a little investigation, I find that there are grayscale
ICC profiles and they will work on pure grayscale images. 
Instead of a conversion matrix, these profiles have only a
tonal correction curve.  It would be possible to implement
a specific mapping using such profiles, but it would not be
a simple matter.

If only a gamma correction is needed, then perhaps a 
grayscale gamma correction display profile would work.
The problem is that your images need to have some sort of
input profile associated with them in order to transform
from the presumably linear image space to the gamma 2.2
space for viewing.

If you would like, I could email you directly a display
profile for both gamma 1.8 (Mac) and gamma 2.2.
