Frank .. thanks for the fast response. I did a quick restore on the system and after a reboot I appear to have CinePaint opening files again. I am however feeling slightly timid towards trying an image merge again until my problem is really sorted out. On your advice I have installed 'exiftool' and now find that I have no such file as "profile.icm" ... obviously the plot thickens. How is profile.icm generated? It is probably immaterial but Gimp worked throughout this entire mess.
