The image was originally a 16-bit one; I saved as jpg, checked that it is in 8bit mode and then applied the curve. Perhaps it was still internally a 16bit image. I did not reload the image. Since I already compiled and installed the corrected version, I would rather not have to check again, but if it helps significantly, I can do it.
