Hi Naz,

since you didn't write what kind of graphics work you
are actually doing, I can only guess.

While Cinepaint (formerly "Film Gimp") did evolve out
of the Gimp, it is basically for frame-by-frame retouching
of feature film. It supports, unlike the Gimp (which I am also
using), up to 32-bit floating-point/channel, HDRI & color
management. The filters inside CinePaint are rather basic,
no "fancy" fx etc. (no bump map, lighting fx, and so on).

Early this year, I tried the new Pixel 1.0 (I am using Ubuntu
Linux), but was thoroughly disappointed, because major
features such as selecting an alpha channel were still buggy.

An option you might want to consider is Krita
<http://www.koffice.org/krita/>, which is part of
KOffice (it is included in the Ubuntu repositories). Krita
is a) open source, and b) much more like Gimp or Photoshop.
It also features up to 32-bit/color management/HDRI.

HTH,

Claus
