Developer environment? It does have the package manager Synaptic,
which is actually a graphical frontend for 'apt-get', but unfortunately
CinePaint isn't included in the repositories I have installed. When I
was still using Ubuntu 5.10 ("Breezy"), and older version of CinePaint 
(I think 0.19-x) was included. At that time, compiling the up-to-date
version from source worked without any problems.

Meanwhile, I did make some progress with ./configure, after installing
'g++' in addition to 'gcc'. There are still some libraries missing, but 
I'll try to fix this myself; otherwise, I'll post here again.
