[CinePaint] is CinePaint for me?

Hi!

I'm running Arch Linux (x86_64) and waiting to receive Epson Perfection
V700 scanner which will be used for the project of scanning ~2500 35mm
slides.

I plan to use VueScan and scan with 4800dpi in raw format which will be
archived and processed later (with Cinelerra) for usage as still images
(e.g. Ken Burns effect etc.) in video projects - first as PAL DVD, later
probably for HD resolution as well (who knows what the future will
bring)...and need some advice.

Knowing about CinePaint capabilities to work with more than 8-bits, I
wonder whether it's the right application to use for my project over
using e.g. Gimp?

In case editing scanned slides with CinePaint is advantageous, I
assume that it would mean that it is better to use 48bit instead of 24
bit, right?
