This may not be directly pertinent to the use of CinePaint, but I say it

Don't use a flatbed scanner for scanning 35mm film!

You will get visibly better results with a dedicated film scanner like 
the Nikon LS-50 or LS-5000.

I have tried.

Of course, people who have not tried both the flatbed solution and a 
film scanner, or who have not really tried to look for differences in 
quality, may want to tell you that the flatbed is equally good or 
"almost" as good. But such is manifestly not the case. If you want the 
best possible results from your scanner, do yourself a favor and buy or 
hire a film scanner.
