Cygwin is the Linux to install on windows boxes. However, if you are
planning to run Cinepaint on it be aware it doesn't compile. Even
though I used the improved files available from others in this
newsgroup there are still too many issues to be solved.

Have you considered making room on your primary partition and loading
linux on it and making your machine dual boot? Or adding a second
disk and installing a version of linux on it? You will be able to
access windows files on a windows partition, most linux releases I am
aware of allow mounting of windows partitions. This way you would
have a good install of linux on it's own disk, there would be few
compile issues for Cinepaint and you could access files on the window
partition.

PS There is a learning curve for Linux, but it really is a great OS
once you get the idea.
