At the cost of hard disks, unless you have a case that cannot handle 
more than one drive, then I would get a second drive.  It will also be 
handy when working on videos as we all know, they take up a lot of space.

The easiest way to learn Linux is to just do it.  Try not to boot into 
Windows for as long as possible.  Another suggestion is to get the 
Windows versions of many of the Linux programs you will use such as 
OpenOffice.

Others have suggested Ubuntu, and from those that I know that have 
experience in Linux will agree.  I have never tried Ubuntu myself.  I 
use Fedora at home and work.
