My own small contribution :- I need 16-bit for professional photo retouching work. Gimp has become stuck in 8-bit and will be there for a long while yet. Cinepaint was my first 16-bit app for photo editing a couple of years ago, and it seemed to hold out great possiblities - but, layers were / are unusable - crashing cinepaint every time I tried to use them.
