When you have to please that kind of crowd, I sometimes wonder why
Open Source developers even bother.

I happen to come from an academic background, and most university
research departments are so impoverished that in order to 
accomplish even the simplest of tasks one has to scrounge for
parts and improvise.  The luxury of using the latest and greatest
equipment just does not exist.  But as a result of that rugged
experience, I am not deceived or enticed by a pretty graphical
interface.  Nor do I place an extreme importance on fancy integration.
The underlying concepts are all that matter to me -- and that
perhaps explains my loyalty to Open Source, however imperfect
it may be.

95%?  That is indeed surprising to hear.  I am currently employed
by a small start up venture, and even though it would reduce software
costs to virtually nil, I would be extremely reluctant to even
suggest Linux.

But, as I understand it, in the commercial graphic arts world
productivity is all that matters.  To please that overly fastidious
crowd becomes the paramount concern.
