I haven't ventured too much into layers yet, but now I use Cinepaint
to create channel masks, which are part of the layers functionality,
and all has gone without a hitch.

But it is an interesting problem. Maybe other available Open Source
tools could be used to first decompose an image and then the results
could be opened in Cinepaint. After some processing, the images could
be then recombined externally.

Most users certainly would scoff at that kind of laborious approach,
but it may be a feasible alternative -- at least until the layer
features are working properly.
