Without the contributions of these two key people, Open Source imaging software would be no better than a cheap toy. Scanners profiles are very easy to create with the coloraid targets. But camera printer profiles are much more difficult to manually produce and I would always prefer to use the profile supplied by the manufacturer. As regards profiles for printers, I would claim that a self-produced color profile is next to impossible without the proper, and very expensive, equipment. Fortunately, the ICC color format is an international standard that is beyond the control of any proprietary interest. Thus, Open Source software can utilize it just as freely as any corporation. We still, however, have to rely on commercial manufacturers for camera and printer profiles, and in most cases they will not freely release them to Open Source users.
