To this list I would add Kai-Uwe Behrmann, for his excellent work 
integrating ICC management to Cinepaint and Robert Krawitz for the 
excellent Gutenprint printer drivers.

This is true, but is no different to the non-OSS world.

Kai-Uwe is producing professional quality ICC profiles using all OSS 
software. Have a look at http://www.argyllcms.com/ for the software to 
connect a colourimeter to.

In the case of printer profiles, this is not the case. If you do not 
wish to invest in the expensive colourimeter head to use in conjunction 
with the abovementioned software, you can use any of the businesses that 
provide commercial colour profiling.

While I have not used them, I have heard good things about Inkjet Arts 
service http://www.inkjetart.com who charge $50 each for a profile.

One thing to note is that you must get CMYK profiles made if you are 
using them with Cinepaint.

Kai-Uwe very kindly produced a profile for me for Epson Premium Gloss 
paper and an R2400 printer. Comparing this profile to the official Epson 
released one, shows the Cinepaint/Gutenprint combination to have a 
slightly larger gamut, particularly in the greens and at the midtone level.

This profile is feely distributable, so if anyone wants a copy of it, 
along with the printrc used, let me know.
