In lieu of the RAW file I will say that the gimp version definitely
shows less fine detail as can be seen especially in the wood grain
pattern at the lower right.  But that has nothing to do with the
bit depth.  If you convert the DSC_1180_lightroom.tiff to 8-bit,
there is no change in details of the wood grain pattern.  The same
with the DSC_1180.tiff file.  Somehow the gimp image just got softened
or "messed up."
