If the camera image contains noise, then you will see noise. If you have dcraw, just do this: dcraw -v -c -w -q 3 -T dsc_xxxx.nef > dsc_xxxx.tif The resulting tif file will show the camera image just as it actually is without any post-processing aside from white balance correction and conversion to SRGB color space. If there is noise produced by the camera then you will see noise. Whatever is there will be there and this is how the image should appear in cinepaint and all the other programs as well. Any further tweaks are up to the user. As for the gimp, I cannot comment since I don't use it. I would suggest that you report your observations to the gimp mailing list or forum. But do please post one of the original nef (raw) files from the D70. I would like to process it with cinepaint and then post the result.
