I have some hopes for OpenJPEG since it is actively developed and clearly improving. If you compare the compress/decompress times of a JPEG2000 library like Jasper to libjpeg, the difference is like night and day. Minutes vs seconds. Regardless, JPEG2000 has been selected as the basis for digital cinema (DCI) so it is being used.
