I defined "the public" in this case as those not involved in development of the CinePaint project, which was definitely not obvious, and I apologize. I've never gotten a "model release" for any of my photography, volumes of which are on my personal website, and publicly available; however they aren't meant for demonstration purposes. I thought I was being careful and respectful by asking that the image of my friend not be widely distributed, and also thought perhaps its dowload would be password-protected, as was its upload. Anyway, the other, original image showing a manufacturer's product, I don't think runs afoul of these legal rules, otherwise any photo of any car model would have to get a release from the manufacturer; as well any shot of any building would have to get the release of the architect. I was worried after sending it to the CinePaint community however due to Robin's concerns, and mentioned that I hadn't checked with the manufacturer (DaVinci) but then this would also apply to the other equipment shown manufactured by Sony, DaVinci, IBM, ViewSonic, Aaton, and a few others.
