dmesg | grep dri is empty

I followed all the instructions on the building page(http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/Building), but dmesg | grep dri is still empty. glxinfo says: name of display: :0.0 Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual Am I missing something obvious?
