lighting(?)/flickering problem with r300

Hello, I am having trouble with my graphics. It looks like some lighting features are misinterpreted and appear as triangles. It is difficult to describe so I attached a screenshot. 
I have already tried changing the TCL options in the DRI config file but the problem persists. Changing to 16bit instead of 32bit color depth also does not do the trick. 
 
 Specs: Kubuntu 6.10 edgy, xorg 7.2 (mesa 6.5.2), free driver, ATI X300

Note that I posted the same question in the forum of the game where this problem occurs but since it is the same with Freespace 2, I believe it is a more general question.
