You'd wish ati's fglrx would support radeon 8500 - only old versions do... Anyway, what's your mesa version? mesa 6.5.3 or higher should be faster with ut2k4 than earlier ones. Also, you could be a bit video-ram limited. Try running in a lower resolution (note that buffers are allocated statically, so you need to decrease the resolution in your xorg.conf), or lower the texture detail (and use s3tc).
