Ok, this matches with the results of JD. But is bad, because I still 
haven't got a clue what's going on here.

For the sake of completeness: pleasy try disabling lsdvd and check if it
makes a difference.

For now this looks like a strange Perl related problem with 
async/buffered I/O. I think I need to mock up a simple Gtk test program,
since Event::ExecFlow/Glib/AnyEvent on their own seem not to be a 
problem.  But this needs some time, so please be patient.
