what fonts does berlin accept?

i had that variable pointing towards /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1

the directory has a lot of entries (lots of .afm and .pfb files). but
the berlin font chooser doesn't show more than one font:

LibGGI: No explicit target specified.
LibGGI: Try to use X target...
list of available fonts :
0 URW Chancery L Medium Italic
please choose a number :0

if i let the variable in berlinrc point to some TTF-directory, same
behavior: i get to select one font out of one, which still doesn't
provide me with characters...
