the size of the vtable is restricted to 64kb I think
it's fixed in gcc3.2 which also has a much improved code generator, esp
for sparc64. as sunfreeware.com has a package of it, there aren't many 
reasons not to switch. 

I'm just trying out the changes to putenv on sparc32, it was the
last problem here for now
