Can't print to Virtual printer port for USB (USB001)

Hi,

I have an Epson Photo 895 with USB-only interface. I successfully use it
with different applications on my Windows XP system including Photoshop.
Now I did my first project with The Gimp and want to print but can't. I
also have a LaserJet 4L installed on LPT1 which is served well by Gimp
with a print job but with the Epson not even the process bar gets filled
(right side of the status bar).

I blamed the USB001 port in the windows printer system, a virtual
printer port for USB installed by XP or the Epson driver and so I
experimentaly changed the port for the Epson to FILE. Thereafter I can
print to the Epson to file including a running process bar of Gimp and
the following Epson preview feature.

So definitely The Gimp has a problem printing to USB001.

I'm using GIMP 1.2.4 on a Windows XP (all updates installed), prebuild
binary version from http://www2.arnes.si/~sopjsimo/gimp/

Has anybody an explanation or even a solution for this?
