Kevin,

    You may be running into a limitation of the TIFF library that is
compiled into GIMP as it uses signed 32 bit integers for accessing data.
This is a common issue that arises on the TIFFLib mailing list.  OF
course, there may also be an internal GIMP limitation you are hitting as
well.
