The workflow diagram on the left is titled "pre GIMP 2.4", and shows  
what I think is your type of problem. The first computer at the top  
shows what I think is the image coming in. Then the middle picture  
shows the image being edited to look nice.

Now comes the important part

On the left side, you'll see the monitor with the globe (which I  
believe represents some user out there viewing your image on some  
website) shows the image much lighter. And worse, the sample print  
output shows the image darker and dirty looking. Ugly.

However, on the right side you see the results of a color managed  
workflow. In that case people browsing over the web see the image  
just the way you want it, not lighter or washed out. And the printout  
looks very much like what you see on screen.
