it's a good question, and I get this one a lot from new users of
Project DOgwaffle too. 

I think that to some degree all trablets will work, but not
necessarily well enough to make everyone happy. Some models are cheap
and also cheaply built, the pen is fragile or needs heavy batteries or
doesn't detect pressure very well or doesn't detect angular info
(tilt, roll)...

SO then you will want to ask yourself, what's your budget?  $80? $100?
more?

I think there is one brand that's worth calling the Mercedes-Benz of
tablet makers: Wacom. And if you're familiar with the C-class, the
equivalent is the Intuos. Wacom also makes lower-cost entry-level
tablets, but the Wacom Intuos is ultimately where you'll want to be.
The question then is if you can afford the $199 and up price tag.

If you don't live in Florida, check our Tigerdirect.com - they ship
from Florida so you probably won't pay sales tax if you order from
them. Ok, so you'll pay shipping. But it's also a fact bthat they
offertheir tablets much lower than retail list price, so you'll save
by comparison with the local retail store. Example: the $99 entry-size
Wacom Graphire starts at $99 in retail, $89 at Tigerdirect last time I
checked. The Wacom Intuos starter size is $199 list, only $169 at
Tigerdirect.

Note that T.D. also offers another brand, namely the Adesso tablet.
You can find some models around $50 there.

There are lenty of other brands out there, but you'll need to get
batteries for the pen (did you know that there's standard sized 
AAAA-sized batteries? yes, quadruple-A!)

One thing you might appreciate with Wacom Intuos is that you can get
additional pens. For example something for airbrushing that looks and
feels more like the spray gun a real airbrushing artist is familiar
with, with the trigger button on top. Or something like the Copic
markers, thin and wide and perfect for cartooning. This one and others
are pens which feel familiar in shape and size and weight. It berings
you all that much closer to the feeling of traditional sketching,
painting, drawing...
