Another good book to check out is "Beginning GIMP from Novice to
Professional."  It starts out slow, explaining the GUI, where things
are and what they do, etc. Later chapters delve into more advanced
topics (layers, GAP, scripts, etc.)  I'm currently reading through it
and can say it's a great reference.  Check out Amazon or google the
title for reviews.
