It might be that your computer is infested with viruses, spyware, or
other malware that simply make running any more demanding software
like GIMP impossible. Or that is has hardware problems. What else do
you use your computer for? Can you run for instance Google Earth
without problems? (Not that Google Earth has anything to do with GIMP,
it's just one application I could think of that is also rather taxing
on resources.)
