72 is a reasonable default.
..the current behavior seems reasonable as I understand you.

I wouldn't change the default behavior.

I would suggest adding:   - density keep

To force it to keep the original image's DPI.

And perhaps  options like resize has with < > % etc.
perhaps already supported.

..but your call, course.
