Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/) has been using GraphicsMagick for its
image processing for a number of years now. Recently John Allspaw
from Flickr gave a presentation ("Operational Efficiency Hacks",
http://www.web2expo.com/webexsf2009/public/schedule/detail/8580) in
which he described refinements to the Flickr architecture so that it
could do more with less. The presentation described changes to
software versions, optimization options, and hardware upgrades, which
allowed Flickr to achieve the same throughput using far fewer
machines, far less space, and far less energy.
Read the presentation at
"http://www.kitchensoap.com/2009/04/03/slides-from-web20-expo-2009-and-somethin-else-interestin/".
You will find that GraphicsMagick (including the recent OpenMP
updates) is featured rather prominently, as well as PHP updates, and
updated hardware.
