Ahhh, I was not aware that there was a second problem and thought that maybe a spam collector had eaten my reply mail. :-) I suggest setting the MAGICK_DEBUG environment variable to 'resource'. This will cause every resource aquire/release event to be sent to wherever GM is configured to send its log messages. Perhaps the perpetrator will be immediately apparent.
