I am no sure that you need such a detailed function since you only 
need to display an image into the root window.  Note that displaying 
into the root window does not work with many of today's window 
managers which absolutely insist on displaying their own background 
image.

Without further API investigation, I have had success in the past 
using the 'gm display' tool and '-window root'.  Also in the past, I 
added the '+progress' option so that an image may be displayed cleanly 
without any on-screen progress indication.  The '-remote' mode may be 
used if image loading needs to be remote controlled.

In the past, GraphicsMagick was used inside an award-winning ("Best 
New Product") multimedia device with embedded Linux and was used to 
display splash/information screens as well as animated slide shows. 
Bare X11 was used with no window manager.
