It has been quite a while since I have been embroiled in this old X11 
code in order to improve operation and fix (the many) memory leaks so 
I don't remember how it works any more.  You have the option of 
looking at magick/display.c code to see how it works, or even punting 
and using high-level utility-style command functions from 
magick/command.h (e.g. GMCommand() or DisplayImageCommand()).  I am 
not sure if there are any ill-effects from using these high-level 
functions in the same context as other code which uses lower-level API 
functions.  Only testing will prove if it works well.
