Currently supported vips is vips8, but with a vips7 compatibility
wrapper on top of it. You can call vips8 stuff directly, see:

Now the core library has been redone, we're redoing the C++, Python
and Ruby bindings. When they are done we'll change the name to vips8
and formally deprecate the vips7 API. Maybe another six months?

Yes, openimageio is very like vips, though they don't have (as far as
I know) the fancy threading system or the range of operations. I don't
know how speed compares. It'd be fun to add them to the vips
benchmark:
