RE: libtiff v3.6.1

We have some specific fixes in our CVS libtiff that should be carefully
integrated. That's the only concern. I would not just plow it in and hope
for the best as Cristy is used to doing. We should diff the files and see
what was done to it and make our decision based on that.

For the record, I was pretty unhappy with the direction libtiff has taken
recently. Instead of keeping up with current image standard (i.e. what Adobe
does), it seems to be falling behind. In fact the developers seem totally
out of touch with reality. The support for the most recent EXIF tags is a
good example. When anyone complains that they don't support it, they now
tell them to go use their new API calls to do it themselves as custom code.
They seem to think that TIFF should be frozen in time and that any new stuff
should be ignored. Not a good sign.

Is anyone aware of a reason to avoid updating to the libtiff 3.6.1
release? ImageMagick is now using libtiff 3.6.1, and in fact feels so
strongly about it that ImageMagick 5.5.7 CVS was silently back-ported
(tagged) to use libtiff 3.6.1.
