Bob and I have had some DPX discussion off-line. This is to recap. Bob says the DLAD test image is linear, not log, and asked if I could get him some DPX log images for testing. I don't have any images cleared to release, but will try to get some. May take a month. Has been on my to-do list for some time to make such images available. With Bob's prompting I hope to get it done soon. Bob asked about the CinePaint log-linear conversion process. I haven't looking into that code myself, but here's how it reportedly works. We bit-shift so that the middle part of the 10-bit log curve is in the middle of the 16-bit linear range. The top and bottom ranges are off of course, but the image still looks presentable. Because bit-shift is perfectly reversable, unmodified pixels suffer no damage on a round trip. Bit-shift is also extremely fast.
