After doing a bit more research, I see that Density is defined by a log relationship so that DPX files marked as using a transfer characteristic of Printing Density should be log files. I have not encountered any such files yet. At least one file I have received is marked as a linear file, but also indicates a reference high quantity of 2.047 which is similar to the default reference high quantity of 2.048 for Printing Density.
